CALL FOR ARTISTS

Peace by Peace prepares for the 65th Anniversary of the Peace Sign

Gerald Holtom (1914-1985) British artist and designer of the "peace sign". In 1958, Holtom created the peace symbol as the logo for the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND). The design is a combination of the letters "N" and "D" of the flag semaphore alphabet, standing for nuclear disarmament.

In a world rife with unrest, it is important to understand the history behind the conflicts and struggles peoples have endured to achieve peace through persistent nonviolent action.

Draft description for 2022 - "Peace by Peace" is a group exhibition of artists reflecting on positive social change though a non-violent collective action. The project challenges artists to translate important social issues of our time into a thoughtful and compelling adaptation of the iconic “Peace Symbol.” The 65th anniversary exhibit will focus on the environment, peace , and collective action.

Environment - how do we humans relate to and resolve our our conflicted relationship with nature.

Environmental Justice; many strive to create equitable healthy environment amidst the assault on peoples from manmade problems long marginalized and neglected.

PEACE. & nonviolent collective action - n keeping with the vision that birthed the 1958 peace sign, the exhibit intends to deploy messages of attaining peace by peaceful protest - to bring attention to the struggles peoples have endured to achieve peace and environmental justice , and social change through persistent nonviolent action.

"There are hopeful signs and opportunities we can grasp to carry us forward to create a civilized society and descent world" - Noam Chomsky
